PPP views with alarm the continuing policy of this government to employ deadly force as an instrument to disperse and control unarmed civil demonstrations in Nigeria.
We are particularly worried by the most recent killings of unarmed Biafran demonstrators in Aba by government security forces.
It would seem that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has become tone deaf to the consequences of employing extra-judicial killings to enforce public peace. It would appear that the government and its security forces no longer hear warning bells.
When peaceful means of channeling grievances are violently suppressed, violent rebellion become inevitable. This is a historical fact. When people are pushed to the wall, they will react in kind. Violence begets violence.
We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to rethink this policy as a matter of national urgency; it is an evil policy that has no place in a free and democratic society. We call upon the President to immediately rescind this beastly directive before the inevitable violent outcomes engulf the rest of us.
It would seem that many in this government are keen on playing the death card in order to provoke a peaceful movement into violence. It would seem that this administration seeks to distract the nation from its woeful failures by creating yet another avoidable national calamity and armed rebellion.
Those who foment violence should know this; it is easy to destroy, but much more difficult to rebuild. The President will do well to heed our warning for the sake of our common peaceful co-existence. If he does not, history will assign to him and to him alone, all the deaths and blood arising from this evil policy.
